The famous Lake Braies is the starting point for this challenging hike. Important: check the traffic restrictions in the Prags Valley between July 10 and September 10.
At the far end of the lake, follow trail marker no. 1 and ascend via the scree slope. This section is largely exposed to the sun, so an early start is recommended during the summer months. The rocky path then leads into a shaded forest trail, and soon you reach the tree line. Continuing between rocks and boulders towards the Seekofel hut, you might even spot an ibex! The valley widens, offering stunning views of the Sennes Nature Park and the Belluno Dolomites. From there, a steep path wends its way up the rock face to the right, secured with an iron chain, as the ground can be slippery. The ascent is steep, and you quickly gain elevation. After the most strenuous section, you reach the ridge of the summit. There, a faint path marked by “Steinmännchen” (piles of stones) marks the way. Before long, the summit cross appears.
The peak rewards you with a breathtaking panorama. On the northern side, the rock face drops off vertically – definitely not for the faint-hearted. The view of Lake Braies from above is a true wonder of nature. The sweeping vista extends in all directions: it is possible to see the famous Three Peaks, the 3,000-meter peaks of the Rieserferner Group, the Tofane, Monte Pelmo, and, on a clear day, the Ortler Group.
The descent follows the same route as the ascent. At the Seekofel hut, you can choose whether to take a detour and descend via the Grünwald Valley (adding approximately 3 km) or return along the same route back.
Starting point: Lake Braies car park (27 km from the hotel)
