The starting point for this hike is the “Dreizinnenblick” (Lago di Landro) near Toblach. The steep rock face of Monte Piana rises behind Lake Dürrensee. The trail to the summit wends its way along this impressive rock face. To embark on this tour, hikers should have a head for heights and be sure-footed. Some sections of the path are secured with ropes. On reaching the tree line, the trail crosses the massif over rocky terrain and ascends over stone steps towards the summit cross.
After about 5 km and 900 meters of elevation, hikers reach the surprisingly flat summit plateau of Monte Piana, which looks quite different from the lake. The route first leads over rocky terrain, then across green meadows to the second peak, Monte Piano. Along the way, hikers pass an open-air museum dedicated to World War I.
The descent follows the “Tourist Trail”, which leads steeply down to Lake Dürrensee and back to the car park.
Alternatively, both peaks can be reached via an easier route from Lake Antorno by following the forest road.
