Art, culture and history have an important place in the old town of Bressanone. The over 1000-year-old town - incidentally the oldest town in Tyrol - was a travel stop for emperors and a pompous bishop's town. Even the elephant Soliman stopped off in Bressanone for a fortnight on his journey to Vienna in 1552.
Today, Bressanone's old town offers an exciting arc between joie de vivre and contemplation. The unique cathedral square in the Alps, the numerous sacred buildings, the listed, extensive medieval old town, arcades and crenellated alleyways, museum treasures, craft tradition and archaeological gems invite you to discover - in addition, modern cafés and excellent restaurants, attractive shops and entertaining events await you. This makes Brixen doubly varied.
